Off The Hamster Wheel

Source: GIPHY Brain Running on wheel

I was thinking… that for a long time I’ve been on a hamster wheel. The hamster wheel of school, the constant cycle of education. It’s not a bad thing, but I AM tired of it. Since the pandemic put the world on pause, it made me realize many things. I won’t get into everything because that would be a novel and I’m not looking to write one right now. One thing I came to realize was that I associated who I was with just being a student. Because that’s really all I knew how to be, a student learning how to become a working adult. I had plans for my career path and jobs I wanted to work, but so far they haven’t come true…YET. I’m sort of in a limbo. I’m finally out of school–no plans on going back anytime soon–and I’m not on my “planned path” to my idea of success. As you continue reading, this may come off as a rant and it is. But it is also a critique how the pandemic has effected my navigation of life after school and other struggles.

I’ve been in school for 21 years (I’m 25 now). So Jr. Kindergarten, Sr. Kindergarten, grades 1-12, 5 years of university and 2 years of college. So as you can see with those numbers, I’ve always been a student. If I think back to my time as a student I’m sure there were many times I feared what would come next. I mean I know what is supposed to come next, which is finding a job in what you’re studying. Then you ask yourself, but do you really want to work in a field that you studied. We can save this conversation for another time. The last two years are my favourite because they allowed me to bring out my creative side. Because I sure as hell didn’t really bring it out in my five years of university ๐Ÿ˜’. With school I added on work that was part time and didn’t relate to any of my studies but a job is a job when you’re in school. BUT this wave of terror called COVID-19 came in and really tore up our dreams/plans, financial stability, health and sanity.

SOURCE: GIHPY Middle Finger GIF

This SOB stopped all the hamster wheels that we were on. This virus really came in like a wrecking ball with Miley Cyrus on top of it and messed everyone up. Well the virus has worked in favour for some, like the businesses that are prospering off of the downfall of regular working class, low-income citizens such as me and many of my friends. WE HAD PLANS TO TAKE THE WORLD BY STORM IN OUR FIELD/INDUSTRY OF INTEREST. And this SOB really said, “No, sit your ass down I’m going to turn the world upside down”. This could have been dealt with a lot better, but we’re here now and we can’t turn back the clock; we can only move forward.

But back to me struggling to achieve my post student life dreams…

Having dreams and plans for a successful summer working in radio (recent radio broadcasting grad) or a job working in media being shot down so quickly was so frustrating. It is still frustrating until today. I’m not where I want to be. I’m not employed full-time in the media industry. I mean I acknowledge that it is a bit tough in Toronto, because there’s so many talented people. I will prevail though don’t doubt me. But the pool of openings seem small because there are many factors (COVID and the industry evolving). The solution seems so simple because people tend to say, “why don’t you just find any job and just work”. Well the answer is, I don’t really want to find a full-time position in field I have no interest in because I just don’t want to…

I don’t want to get stuck knowing that I’m working somewhere just for a steady flow of income. I want a steady flow of income and a steady flow of happiness knowing I’m working in the media industry.

This next paragraph holds my current annoyance with the act of job hunting. I don’t think I’m the only one who feels the same way.

Source: GIPHY “New York aka Tiffany Pollard from Flavor of Love”

This job search is a bitch to do. I’ve applied to many jobs but I haven’t kept track of how many because I don’t need to make myself sad about all the responses I didn’t get ๐Ÿฅด. But I will say I do appreciate the speedy rejection emails from some of y’all. The current system in place is very frustrating to deal with. For example, for some companies that I have applied to, you are asked to upload your resume etc and submit. The trouble arises when there are other positions you want to apply to within that company but your candidate profile still holds the resume for the other position. Are you with me still on how this is an issue? I don’t want to delete the resume or cover letter attached when I don’t even know the status of my application. I’ve found that resume writing really varies for different industries. Some people keep the same resume and just send it out with specific wording since job hunting requires you to at times finesse the system that weeds out applications. Other people have to make adjustments to every job to fit the job description of the position they’re applying to. Using keywords that you see in the job description is one example. I wish I could have 1 resume with everything I’ve done in my life that translates to the jobs I want to work. But then that would mean maybe a 4 page resume. The struggle is real when you want to stand out but the systems that we use either block us out. (PSA: The statement you just read applies to things outside of job hunting too). #IYKYK ๐Ÿ‘€

I’m blessed to be in a position where I’m able to not have a full-time job right away after school. But it is not ideal, those OSAP vultures will come for me eventually. I really feel for those who are in the same boat or even worse. Can’t lie I feel left out or feel like I’m not doing enough to contribute to society in the ways I want. I wanted to use my personality to entertain to the degree that I imagined. I mean it will happen eventually, but I was ready for it to happen sooner. I think I just need to modify my plans more to fit the current climate that we’re in and stay positive with the mindset of ‘What’s for me is for me, as long as I don’t give up trying’.

As I said I’m 25, so I think this my quarter life crisis activated? I don’t know. What I do know is that amongst all my negative emotions towards this situation, there is a positive. This pandemic really forced me and others to take a break. I have been on a hamster wheel for 21 years, no gap years were ever taken to really get to know myself outside of being a student. I’m glad for that because I found new things to learn on my own time to help keep my content creating skills up to date. I also have come back to enjoy things like anime, movies and shows. I used to watch movies all the time when I was in high school, I even wanted to become a film critic. So I may not have found the full-time job I’ve wanted, but I’m glad I took the step to continue making content about things I’m enjoying. SUBSCRIBE to my Youtube channel where I’m currently making videos on anime shows and I will eventually transition into more films and shows.

Glad you made it this far because this is a long as blog post. Follow me on Twitter and Instagram as well to stay updated with me. See ya ๐Ÿ’š

creating content at this time? I’m at a road block ๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ†˜

Wow okay so being a content creator is fun and dandy until you’re at a road block. ๐Ÿšซโ›”๏ธ๐Ÿ›‘

If you aren’t producing anything… who gon’ check YOU boo?

NO ONE. Especially if you aren’t being paid for it.

BUT… This isn’t to say you should just stop.

Creating content is fun. It really should just be meant for YOU. It also works as a form of release for some people. Being able to post whatever and whenever.

For the sake of this post, when I’m talking about creating content I mean posting on Instagram ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฟ@iamdanielleo. When I decide that I want to post I always wonder how is my post going to serve my followers. What are my intentions when putting out content?

And yes I am guilty of thinking “hmm I wonder how many likes this will get” ๐Ÿค” and so what…Let’s be real who doesn’t? This will be a factor in anything you put out when you work in media.

You want to know if your personality, or ideas are reaching people. You want to build connections through that and that is shown through your engagement. Heck maybe I can make some cash money off of my social media ๐Ÿค‘

Writing this was helpful because this is content. It’s delivering information through whatever way people decide to absorb it.

Next step: to get over the hill of self motivation because this post has been in my drafts for quite some time.

Thanks for reading. Come back next time, take a look at my other posts, or leave a comment or prompt for things you would like for me to write about!

Vinyl’s are cool

This is a story about music.

Love it. Vinyls are cool. My parents used to have a record player, but it is no longer with us probably because moving years ago.

Fast forward to maybe 2 years ago: My sister gets a record player but I have no idea where any of the older records have gone in my house.

Fast forward x2: COVID-19 and being stuck at home. Ok actually it was before we got told to stay home.

But we found the records in one of the closets at home.

Some of the records we found in the closet, but apparently there are more that other family members have kept

This has been an interesting experience taking a look at records and playing them a bit because this is the time where streaming services are dominating the world. It’s nice to listen to music that my parents went out and physically bought.

I picked out 2 records that were in the cluster that I thought were relatively cool and slightly surprising.

David Bowie “Let’s Dance” and Tina Turner “Private Dancer”

I was more surprised that my parents had a David Bowie album. My mom always talks about how she LOVES Michael Jackson. So I was surprised to not see it in the pile.

* unless its somewhere else and we just haven’t found it*

I’m glad I recognized some songs on the albums. I appreciate the good music that predates my existence.

Overall, vinyls are pretty cool I’m glad my sister has a record player. She does have vinyls of current artists which I’ll test out soon.

But the older music just hits different.

He’s the best when he’s sleeping

My sister got a dog a few years ago. A shih(t)-tzu ๐Ÿ’ฉ who I believe might be mixed with another breed. I love this dog, especially when he’s sleeping.

He tends to bother you when you’re eating your food (he ignores his own). He also succeeds in laying on you when you’re busy doing work, or nudging anything that is distracting you from him.

Meet LEO. ๐Ÿถ

Sleeping by my feet while I worked on some stuff after he ran around being a bit naughty.
Gave the dude some attention, and he snuggled his way into my armpit? Lol

I love this little guy, especially when he’s sleeping.

When he’s up and acting a fool or wants something and looks at you WITH HIS BIG EYES ๐Ÿ‘€. There’s no way you can say no without feelings like the meanest person ever.

Black History is almost done but is it really though?

I’m BLACK and I’m PROUD.

Black History Month is something I love and hate.

I love that our history is talked about more, black people get paid more during this time to attend speaking events, and I like to celebrate by attending events.

I also hate black History Month because it’s in February.

February. The SHORTEST month of the year, one of the COLDEST months of the year, and probably at times the SADDEST month for some people.

But it was still chosen to be the month dedicated to Black History.

This year I’ve decided to get more involved with events that are directly related to empowering black people, black arts, and black businesses. As a soon to be graduating student of Humber College I recognize the importance of making connections outside of school.

Volunteering as Media Crew for Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce

By joining these organizations I’ve been lucky to attend other events with great people such as Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine and more.

Economic Club of Canada having a lunch event surrounding female leaders and the discussion around the diaspora

All these events I’ve gone to are important for the black community. They’re also important for personal growth. As a student I can take my experiences back to my peers hopefully to Humber.

Honouring the Elder Black Men in Toronto who are pioneers in the movement of being great examples of Black Men

It is important to bring this back to Humber so that they can take inspiration when it comes to planning events during black history month.

I’ve documented some of my reactions and behind the scenes at these events.

Check out my Facebook page for my live videos, and also my Instagram page for upcoming posts on my time.

I like to keep my social pages simple and I’m under the same name all over

Canadian Winter, eh?

I think this is hilarious that one day I decide to take a picture of the sky on my way into school…

I mean it was 8am, I was tired but I never miss class.

And the sun was shining, so hey why not take a picture to document the moment.

THEN 24 HOURS LATER…

We get this white blanket of snow.

I failed to check the weather, the night before and was shocked in the morning when the snow was all around.

I question why I still get shocked at this, I was born in Canada. I have lived here my entire life.

If this the life of an adult, because as a kid I believe I liked the snow more especially during recess.

Even though it did take a little extra time to take off/put on my snow gear.

The weather is getting out of control. What happened to the groundhog predicting that spring is on the way.

It sure as heck doesn’t feel like it.

Imagine the shock of taking a picture one day, in the same spot the next day.

The contrast is uncanny. Flabbergasting. I wish it wasn’t real, but this is just the Canadian winter life in Toronto.

Money…money…I need money! Help me please! ๐Ÿฅบ

Weโ€™re all in this together. The student struggle is real when it comes to money and it just disappears so quickly. Weโ€™re all just trying to live our best life as a college student. But we still have to do the ‘adulting’ thing ๐Ÿ™„

You may have come to college with money given to you by your parents, you may have earned it with a job, you also may have money from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), or all three. All of this to say, you have money that you need to spend in order to stay a functioning human being in the world we live in.

Thanks capitalism.

While we live in this world of capitalism and until someone decides to make changes to it we’re stuck. Just like this big clunky machine.

It’s on the North campus at Humber College, to help when you need cash but don’t have enough. Let me tell you, if you don’t know alreadyโ€ฆ you lose more money using these bank machines than your regular banking institution’s ATM machine.

I learned this from experience. It was a few years ago, and I needed some money to buy some drinks at a bar (legal drinking age is 19+ in Ontario). I didn’t have cash, but the bar definitely had a machine just like this. Long story short, the machine charges you a service fee, and your bank also charges you for using a machine that isn’t associated with them as well. The unfairness of it all is just ridiculous. ๐Ÿคฌ

But hey, thank CAPITALISM.

Yes, always protect your pin. I wish we would be protected from extra fees when people use this bank machine๐Ÿ’ธ

Now moving away from a rabbit whole that we would get stuck in, let’s get back to the relationship between being a student and money.

The task of learning how to manage our money can be daunting. We need it, we want to splurge on it, but we canโ€™t do that because then weโ€™ll be broke. Thatโ€™s a place no one wants to be.

Iโ€™m serious. NO ONE. It ain’t fun or pretty. It’s stressful and sometimes it can lead you to feeling hopeless and helpless.

But as a college student, there are ways to relieve those types of feelings. Scholarships, grants and financial services to help with your money issues.

IGNITE posters are all around campus. You just have to find them and follow the steps to get the support you need.

At Humber College, we have IGNITE. They’re our student union that finds ways to keep us engaged and connected like a community. They also have many ways to help students who are in financial need. There are applications that need to be filled out and approved in order to even get it. So do me a huge favour if you’re going through some issues with money. Check them out by clicking here.

Now let’s take a look at yourself…

Sometimes people feel like they don’t want to depend on other people or an institution to help with their finances.

Great, that is no problem; more power to you if you’re very independent. One thing you can do is save your own money. Manage your own finances in a way where you know you aren’t spending more than what is necessary.  Self-discipline is very important.

Think about it as having a piggy bank, or a jar where you store extra change or any money that you have left over that doesn’t need to be used immediately.

I’ve put my own personal spin to my money jar. I’ve made it my mission to collect spare change in coins that have a special design on the face. It is my hope that one day these coins will be worth more than what they are because they will become collectibles items.

This may be a far-fetched dream, or this dream may out live me. But the fact is money is being saved. I’ve disciplined myself enough to save these coins. Maybe one day I’ll let go of the collectible dream and use them for something, but as of now I’m still collecting.

This is my coin jar. Why would you want to spend money when they have interesting designs like this on the Canadian dollar.

Take a moment to further think about your current financial situation as a student.

What are your next steps to lessen your financial burdens.

Start looking at how much you’re spending, what things you can cut, what you can save and again evaluate the changes that can occur.

By changing your current spending habits, looking for financial support, and avoiding extra fees you can see changes.

Just give it a try.

Wait! There is a place for that: E-Waste Recycling

BlackBerry Bold 9900, BlackBerry Bold 9780 and iPhone 7’s only current usage is to collect dust. Photo taken by: Danielle Owusu, January 2020

Your phone contract is coming to an end, or the newest iPhone/ Android phone is coming out and you really want it. Youโ€™re definitely going to get it and thereโ€™s no doubt about it. But what do you do with your current phone? Yes, you can sell it online or bring your phone in store to reduce the price of the new phone you want to get.

That is a great plan, but what if no one wants to buy it. Are you going to throw it out into the garbage with everything else or just let it sit in your home until you figure out what to do with it. If you do the latter, the chances of it being forgotten and becoming a dust collector are very high. (See image above)

E-Waste is electronic waste. Think about it. All the old electronics you donโ€™t use anymore, how do you dispose of them?

Most common answer is in the garbage, which is the wrong place to put them.

Maybe consider thisโ€ฆ

RECYCLING.

It’s nothing new. You’ve probably been taught to recycle paper, plastic and compost. Well recycling electronics is a thing as well!

We have so much electronic waste. Theyโ€™re old phones, computers, fax machines, printers, and all the electronic items that youโ€™ve thrown out into the wrong bin.

Look through your homes, collect all your used and ignored electronic devices and recycle them. Youโ€™re not using it, itโ€™s outdated, and you donโ€™t need it anymore depending on what it is.

The new year has started but it’s not too late to add something like this to your New Year resolution list. Letโ€™s call it resolution #36. Reduce e-waste.

Luckily if youโ€™re living in Toronto or the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) there are places where you can drop off your electronics that are not being used anymore.

You donโ€™t have to look far and wide to find what is in proximity of your home. A simple search of where to recycle your electronics will lead you to websites that will provide maps which you can then pinpoint where to drop off your electronics.

Remember this is to help the environment.

Thereโ€™s always a place to dispose of things, you just have to find the right place.
